If Subhash Chandra Bose knew that 50 years post-independence, for which he practically gave his life, the country would be swept into a whirlpool of corruption, scams and chaos, then he might have had a very different opinion about our rulers, the British. At least then the injustice that prevailed was practiced by the Colonial government against our people, as opposed to today’s drama, where our government and MPs practically rape the country of its last bit of dignity and pride. The country has been facing one scam after another, and one can’t really blame the old soul Anna for fighting against it with all his might the old-world way. Yes, isn’t this what Gandhi would have done had he been around?
The bogus laws and the improper execution of effective laws have caused India to stand where it is today. Corruption exists in every part of the world, but the degree varies. India has been in a tsunami of corruption in the past decade, and the degree seems to be increasing. Some of the major scams which surfaced recently resulted in a rude awakening from the deep slumber, and a reminder of how much our country has deteriorated. Some of the top scams which rocked the country are:
-
2G spectrum scam: Go google ‘top scams in India’ and I’ll willingly give away all my savings to you if the 2G scam does not top the list. This is one of the biggest and most baffling scams to have rocked India. Caught up in the epicentre of this Rs. 1.76 lakh crore scam is A. Raja, the ex-Telecom minister of India, and Kanimozi. The scam involved distributing 2G spectrum licenses to private companies at incredibly throw-away prices, and at a first come first serve basis. As if this was not controversial enough, the entry of Neera Radia, in all her fallen glory, fuelled the controversy.
-
The Common Wealth scam: Also known as the Kalmadi scam, it is one of the few scams which literally brought India to its knees in the limelight of supreme embarrassment and criticism, at an international front. The Common Wealth Games 2011, hosted by India, gained widespread notoriety even before the start of the actual event. Out of the staggering Rs 7000 crore which was intended to be spent on the games, only half of it was used while the other half went into the trouser, jacket and the shirt pockets of corrupt ministers.
-
Adarsh Housing scam: The absolute shamelessness of Indian ministers and corrupt bureaucrats was brought to light in the revelation of this scam. The area reserved for the widows of the Kargil war was seized by greedy politicians, bureaucrats. The wrongful allocation of the plot to people other than who it was meant for, stoked a huge controversy.
-
Satyam scam: The corporate world was rocked by the Rs 14,000 crore Satyam scam. The Satyam Computer Services scam disgraced Mr. Ramalinga Raju, the former chairman of the company, who had been manipulating the profit and revenues of the company for decades by keeping everyone in dark about it. The company was later overtaken by Tech Mahindra.
Amongst all other scams, these are the top scams of the country. These scams humiliated India and pushed it further down in the sea of corruption. Whether or not Anna can give India the true Lokpal, one sure wishes he can raise enough awareness amongst the people to help kick these corrupt leaders down from their authoritative chair right down to the Tihar jail.
