Holiday in Spain: A College Friends Reunion

Holidays in Spain
Hello from Montjuic, Barcelona!

There’s a particular kind of math that happens when four college friends try to be in the same city at the same time. One flies from Dallas, one from London, two from Delhi, all converging in Spain for a holiday. We hadn’t all been in the same room in years. This was worth the math.

Why Spain, why March
We picked Spain mostly because it sat roughly in the middle of everyone’s map, and March meant good weather without the summer crowds or prices. Madrid and Barcelona gave us two very different moods in one trip: Madrid’s grand, unhurried elegance, and Barcelona’s warmer, beach-meets-art energy. Five days felt like the right amount of time without anyone needing to rush home and recover from the trip itself. As per me, March is the best time to visit Spain. It’s still winters, yet full of sunshine and liveliness. I can easily say that because of the weather, we had the best holiday in Spain.

Madrid: the first two days
We landed within a few hours of each other, which still feels like a small miracle. Our trip started the minute we all landed. Not even a minute given to laze or put the legs up. Every minute counted. Every moment had to be made a memory. Because finally we were all out of a video call and million times zones into one frame, one timezone.

Things worth your time in Madrid:
The Royal Palace anchored our first proper day. The Royal Palace, a short walk away from our hotel, is worth doing on the same day to make the most of being in that part of the city.
Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park, Gran Via became our default “let’s just walk and talk” spots, and honestly one of my favourite memories from the trip was the unplanned afternoon, doing absolutely nothing structured.
For food, we ate well without overplanning it. A proper tapas crawl through the Gran Via was the highlight, small plates, no reservations needed, just walking until something smelled right. We called it a night at 10 pm, tired, sleepy and being zombies, and the next day was even more action packed.
We gave ourselves one early planned morning, which in hindsight was one of the better decisions of the trip. Four people who haven’t seen each other in years need structured time as much as they need a sightseeing list. We made our way to Segovia and Toledo Tour and reached our coach at sharp 8:51 am. The coach started at 9:05 am and we all heaved a sigh of relief that we didn’t miss it.
We discovered the historic cities of Toledo and Segovia on this guided day tour from Madrid. I still remember the aroma of one of the best margherita pizzas I had there with Coke out of a glass bottle. We strolled through both the cities learning about their fascinating history.

Barcelona: the next three days
A quick high-speed train ride got us from Madrid to Barcelona, comfortable enough that it felt like part of the trip rather than a chor.
Barcelona is a different rhythm entirely.
The Gothic Quarter was our favourite few hours of the whole trip, narrow streets, small shops, and the kind of architecture that makes you stop talking mid-sentence to look up. We wandered without much of a plan and it worked out better than the days we’d actually mapped out. The night was at the spectacular Montjuïc Hill. I still awe at the fountain show and the view overlooking the city.
For food, since I am a vegetarian, I can’t help you much on what to eat. I survived on veg tapas, nachos, Spanish tomato bread, margherita pizza, pasta, and of course the veg food I carried from home. I did’t like the Spanish rice paella. I loved the churros with the chocolate sauce.

The next day was at the Telefèric de Montjuïc. One needs ample time there. It takes more than an hour to reach there from Barcelona. And then a cable ride to get to the top. Our evening was at the beautiful Barceloneta Beach. We strolled & giggled through chilling winds. A short walk along the cold beach in the evening followed by dinner, ended the day on the right note.

Shopping in Barcelona
La Rambla, luxurious avenues in Eixample to bustling pedestrian corridors in the Gothic Quarter and bohemian markets, Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya, Gran Via, it’s shop till you drop in Barcelona.
From sliding into Sephora to Cartier and Primark to souvenir shopping, it’s all here.

We spent our final day at Park Güell and Sagrada Família, both marvels by Antoni Gaudi. Do the booking in advance to save your time there. It was an unbelievable day. All of us together in Spain amidst architectural marvels and the realisation that it was ending made it so emotional for all of us.

What made it work
Looking back, the trip worked because we all made it work. From booking tickets to applying for visas to planning the days, we all did our part. Nobody felt like they were running a checklist instead of actually being with each other. The conversations that happened over a hustling breakfast or a long walk back to the hotel mattered more than any single sight on the list. Our holiday in Spain was a combined effort and it paid.

Isn’t this worth framing?

If you’re planning a reunion trip with friends scattered across time zones, my honest advice is to divide the work and divide the responsibilities. Book the flights, pick a shape for each day, and then leave enough room for the version of the trip that only happens when nobody’s in a hurry.
And I’m sure, this article has inspired you to plan your next holiday in Spain. After all, a holiday in Spain is for everyone because you see it all at one place- football frenzy, tapas, Gaudi’s marvels, night bars, amazing shopping and a lot of good time together.

If you’ve been to Spain, I’d like to hear from you. If you haven’t, when are you booking the tickets?
