Father’s Day History and origin

My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me. Jim Valvano

Though commercialisation is the key behind all Days dedicated to mankind today; the third Sunday in the month of June every year is celebrated as Father’s day.

Father’s Day history:

Started with good intentions to honor & appreciate single parenthood, it was in the year 1910 when a loving daughter Sonora Smart Dodd celebrated the spirit of love, affection, caring by her father who was a Civil war veteran & a single parent and brought up his six children. Though originally it was to be celebrated on 5th June on her father’s birthday, but circumstances deferred it to the third Sunday in June.

It was in 1930 after Sonora completed her studies she promoted the celebrations again. Soon the event took the national stage & by 1938 the awareness, acceptance & commercial promotion of gifts to celebrate the occasion took the retailers to new sales on the Father’s day, which later on has become the second Christmas sale week for men oriented gift industry. With ties, tobacco, garments, cakes etc & present day the gifts have surpassed the ceiling of designer thought process—even companies like Godrej are promoting for Fathers day and the hair care products/ men grooming segment sales have touched its peak this season. Designer products are the craze this Fathers day. Since Father’s day origin, the celebrations have gained momentum for this is the day dedicated to all Fathers in the world.
