15 Beauty Secrets by Shahnaz Husain

1. “There is nothing which cannot be learnt or done.” What is your thought behind this statement of yours?

My motto has always been “nothing is impossible!” I also believe that learning never stops. I always say to myself, “I may not know this, but I can learn it.” Also, I never stop trying. If you never stop trying, you cannot fail…..whether it is learning or doing something.

2. You are an inspiration to many women who look up to role models for inspiration. What is your one key advice to them?

I would tell women that they should dare to dream and then follow their dreams with faith and courage. Professional qualifications and training is the order of the day. So, it is essential to acquire professional and vocational training in the field that interests you. Believe in yourself and your own abilities. The sky is the limit, but one should have relentless determination to excel and the ability for sheer hard work. You may start small, but think “big.” Think that nothing is beyond you.

3. How can women instil more confidence in them?

In the competitive career world of today, confidence counts. A sense of accomplishment can provide a big boost. It helps to build up confidence. You can do this by striving for high level fitness. Also, develop a hobby or a creative talent. There are so many things one can learn. There is no end to learning. You may have a talent in painting, or singing, or embroidery, or some other craft. Developing a hobby gives an interesting dimension to the personality. In fact, you can even make your hobby into a career. Try turning to your hobby when you are bored or depressed and see the difference. One can also improve the appearance. In fact, there are many jobs today in which the appearance counts and also boosts confidence. Doing a good deed, helping another person, even lending a sympathetic ear can actually help you too. You will not only make friends, but actually feel good. Take time off from your studies or work for voluntary social service two or three times a week. It’s a wonderful way of getting to meet people and also building up a sense of self-worth and confidence.

4. You are a queen of beauty industry. What are your favourite 5 brands other than yours?

I have been formulating products for more than four decades. I have not used other brands, so I would not be able to mention my favourite brands.

5. What are your top 5 products that sell like hot cakes?

We formulate over 375 products. Among the top products would be Shalife Nourishing Cream, Shatone herbal hair tonic, Shamla hair cleanser, Plant Stems Cell Redensifying Serum and Shaeyes Herbal Kajal.

6. What’s your advice to people with acne and acne marks?

People, especially teenagers, are always told that they “will grow out of” acne. On the contrary, one should seek professional treatment in good time, so that the condition can be controlled, because it leaves extensive scars and marks. A blackhead is a primary acne lesion. So, if you have blackheads, go for “clean-ups” to a good skin care clinic, so that the blackheads are extracted and acne can be prevented. A person with acne should learn how to take daily care of the skin, using specialized cleansers, medicated anti-acne lotions and anti-blemish creams. The use of rich nourishing and moisturising creams should be avoided, as they block the pores and cause acne, or aggravate an acne condition.

My opinion: These Beauty Tips by Shahnaz Husain are a must to remember for a healthy skin.

7. What can be done to reverse premature greying of hair?

White hair cannot turn into black. In other words, hair greying cannot be reversed. However, it can be controlled. The exact cause of greying is not known as yet. Some doctors say that the cause lies in the immune system, or in genetic factors. Amla is said to check greying. As you know, amla is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C and it is extremely stable and is not destroyed by heat. Vitamin C helps to strengthen the immune system. Have the juice of one raw amla added to a glass of water daily. Or, ask your doctor to prescribe Vitamin C and Vitamin B-Complex. You can also add dry amla powder to henna paste to make a hair pack.

8. Hair fall is a major concern nowadays. What’s your tip to curb it?

Some of the reasons for hair loss are dandruff, oily scalp, stress, thyroid imbalance, illness, nutritional deficiencies, hair damage (caused by repeated dyeing, colouring, perming, straightening) etc. Hair loss after pregnancy is also common. Men can also suffer from hormone related hair loss. So, one should try to identify the cause. I advise the use of a non-oily herbal hair tonic daily, which contains Ayurvedic ingredients and has been used to check hair loss and promote hair growth. Apply oil once a week the night before shampoo. If you like, you can apply olive oil or pure coconut oil. Avoid head massage. If there is hair loss, the roots are already weak and massage may aggravate the problem. If the hair is oily, avoid oil applications. If the hair is dry, shampoo twice a week. For oily hair, shampoo 3 or 4 times a week. Use less shampoo. Dilute with water and then apply. Diet is very important. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily, as it is rich in amino acids, which promote hair growth. Include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soyabean, curd, in your diet. Add the juice of a lemon to a glass of water and have it first thing in the morning. Ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.

9. In today’s stressful life, please tell 5 mantras to live happily?

Stress occurs daily, so we should adopt some ways to get rid of it on a daily basis. One important way is exercise. Daily exercise helps us to counteract the effects of stress, both physically and mentally. Physical activity helps to use up the excess adrenaline, which is released during stress. It helps to feel more positive about life. A brisk walk is ideal. To walk “briskly” and really benefit from it, you need to walk for at least half an hour. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before starting any form of exercise.

Yoga is a good form of routine exercise. Deep breathing exercises and yogic asanas are very helpful in coping with stress. Lie down and take deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling slowly and rhythmically. Then allow the body to relax totally. Concentrate on relaxing the body.

Fresh, organic foods are recommended by Ayurveda, so that the body is supplied with nutrients. The general feeling of well being and vitality actually improves the mental outlook, helps the body to cope with stress, boosts self confidence and adds a zest to life. Ayurveda advocates a diet that is high in fresh fruits and vegetables, unprocessed cereals, sprouted grains, nuts, seeds, yogurt.

Adequate and regular sleep is very important to reduce stress. During sleep, the body is most relaxed and the essential body processes slow down. This is when the repair and restoration process goes on and the renewal of new cells speeds up.

One can go for facial and body massages or spa treatments to bring about relaxation. Facial and body massages have great benefits in this respect. In fact, a foot massage is ideal for removing fatigue and reducing stress. Massage induces relaxation, stimulates blood circulation and helps in removing toxins and wastes.

10. What are the initiatives done by Shahnaz Husain Group to give back to the society?

I wanted to make a positive contribution towards empowering the less privileged and physically challenged to make them financially independent and self-reliant. I started my free beauty training course for the speech and hearing impaired in 1984. It was inaugurated by the then President of India, late Dr. Giani Zail Singh. Since then we have trained hundreds of students and even helped them find employment. In 2008, I started free beauty courses for the visually impaired, designing special treatments. I also wrote a book on beauty, which has been put into Braille for the students. We are also offering free vocational training in beauty and career opportunities to acid attack survivors.

At the end of the course the students receive the Shahnaz Husain Beauty Diploma, so that they can find jobs and lead meaningful lives. We have contributed to Government Skill Development through my beauty academy for Training and Certifying under-privileged women in the beauty and wellness industry. Over 50,000 women have been trained. The beneficiaries also received Toolkits to help them start their own business, without relocating from home. I also formulated the Chemoline Range, based on Ayurveda, to alleviate the effects of chemotherapy and radiation on the skin and hair. The products have already been given free of cost to cancer hospitals.
